Hello guys! I hope life is treating you very well and your reading is going strong this month. I’m going to finish prodigy today or tomorrow so a review (FINALLY) should be up on Wednesday.I am enjoying it a lot, but I’m finding it hard to describe it to other people so I kind of say ‘It’s like the Hunger Games’ when I really isn’t but people seem not know what the word dystopia means so I’m not left with a lot of options.
Anyway, it’s Tuesday so this is my Top Ten Tuesday post! The theme this week is ‘Ten Books That Every X fan should read’ basically, but after reading so many other amazing TTT posts, I decided to go back to my old ways and do a TBR post today! These books all have magical realism elements to them I believe and I LOVE magical realism but sadly I have read not a lot of them. Hopefully this post makes me roll my sleeves and get some!
Without further ado, here are some books to slobber over!
1) Wink Poppy Midnight by April Genevieve Tucholke
This book caught my attention because of that BEAUTIFULLY AWESOME COVER! Who ever designed this cover should win a medal! Anyway, after marvelling at the pretty cover, I check out the summary and sounds super intriguing! This book falls under the magical realism bracket apparently so that makes me even more excited to read it (hopefully soon!)
2) Magonia by Maria Dahvana Headley
Again, another beautiful cover! I know there has been loads of mixed feedback for this book but when the first few lines of a summary are –
Aza Ray is drowning in thin air.
Since she was a baby, Aza has suffered from a mysterious lung disease that makes it ever harder for her to breathe, to speak—to live.
-then I kind of need to see if I like this book or not myself!
3) Grief Is The Thing With Feathers by Max Porter
Grief Is The Thing With Feathers is my kind of book! It just reeks of magical realism and I have a thing for depressing book when I’m in the mood for it. The story sounds so interesting and it is highly rated and raved about. I am definitely getting to this book this year.
4) The Love That Split The World by Emily Henry
A lovely hyped YA book next! The Love That Split The World is a book that has been making the rounds on both blogs and booktube. The summary sounds really interesting and it seems like a normal-girl-turns-into-extroadinary-girl story. I’m also getting some Boundless by Cynthia Hand vibes??? Only faint vibes, but definitely some vibes.
5) The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August by Claire North
This book has been on my TBR for AAAAGES! It’s a mystery why I haven’t picked it up yet! This book has some good reviews and I am always a sucker for some mysterious time travel story. I’ll try to pick it up later on this month if I have some spare coins in my pocket.
Anyway, check out this summary, because it’s very intriguing.
No matter what he does or the decisions he makes, when death comes, Harry always returns to where he began, a child with all the knowledge of a life he has already lived a dozen times before. Nothing ever changes.
Until now.
As Harry nears the end of his eleventh life, a little girl appears at his bedside. ‘I nearly missed you, Doctor August,’ she says. ‘I need to send a message.’
This is the story of what Harry does next, and what he did before, and how he tries to save a past he cannot change and a future he cannot allow.
6) The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows for Ava Lavender by Leslye Walton
Is it me or do magical realism books have the most stunning covers? Well The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender fits my statement as this cover is gorgeous and is what attracted me to this book in the first place. And even if the cover didn’t encourage me to add this to my TBR pile, the fact that the protagonist has wings sold it for me.
This is another book that has been on my TBR for too long! I mean a story about gaps and people getting lost in them? Sign me up! And it has a mystery plot line as well according to the summary. So basically this book sounds fantastic.
8) All The Birds In The Sky by Charlie Jane Anders
I’ve seen so many awesome reviews for this book. Firstly it is full on Magical realism and secondly something just tells me that it has some The Night Circus vibes going on and The Night Circus is one of the most beautiful books that I’ve ever read so this book was added to my TBR straight away.
9) Foxlowe by Eleanor Wasserberg
Whenever I talk about this book I just drop the summary, which I’m going to do now, because if not I would just be typing I WANT THIS BOOK!
A chilling, compulsive debut about group mentality, superstition and betrayal – and a utopian commune gone badly wrong
We were the Family, and Foxlowe was our home. There was me – my name is Green – and my little sister, Blue. There was October, who we called Toby, and Ellensia, Dylan, Liberty, Pet and Egg. There was Richard, of course, who was one of the Founders. And there was Freya.
We were the Family, but we weren’t just an ordinary family. We were a new, better kind of family.
We didn’t need to go to school, because we had a new, better kind of education. We shared everything. We were close to the ancient way of living and the ancient landscape. We knew the moors, and the standing stones. We celebrated the solstice in the correct way, with honey and fruit and garlands of fresh flowers. We knew the Bad and we knew how to keep it away.
And we had Foxlowe, our home. Where we were free.
There really was no reason for anyone to want to leave.
10) Every Day by David Levithan
Loads of people have read David Levithan but I haven’t even read one of his most popular novels, Every Day. The whole premise of the book is just really intriguing and different to anything I’ve read. I will have to get to this one soon as this one has been on my TBR for forever!
These are the books that I need to read because I am in love with the sub-genre magical realism! What magical realism books do you recommend? Or want to read? Comment below and let’s chat!

-Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by The Broke and The Bookish where they pick a new topic each week for us to create a top ten list to.
Oh my god you have to HAVE TO read The Love That Split the World and Bone Gap. They are both so amazing and probably my favourite magical realism books! Honestly I don’t think I can put into words how much I enjoyed both of those books.
I have quite a few on my to-read list as well; Magonia been on there for ages now and I’ve seen so much of Wink Poppy Midnight that I have to check it out soon.
Great pick for this week Astra, and a great topic as well 😀

I’m going to see if I could get them soon! (And by soon, I mean the first half of this year because my book buying list is extremeeeeeeely long!) I spotted both Magonia and Wink Poppy Midnight because of the beautiful covers, but the plots are so intriguing as well!
Thank you!

Well I am very excited for you to read them and to hear your thoughts on them! And I know what you mean, my to-buy list is so long and I’ve really overspent this month already!
I’ve just heard some good things about Wink Poppy Midnight already, Magonia has been in my to-read list for ages so one day I’ll get around to it 😀

I am officially not buying anymore this month, as I’ve spent SO much already. It’s really bad….
I heard mixed things about Magonia which is why I’ve been on the fence about it, but I just have to read it for myself to see if I like it 🙂

I’m the same actually. After this month, because I’ve already ordered and pre-ordered a lot of books, I’m putting myself on a book-buying ban for a while.
I’ve heard the same about Magonia actually, but I haven’t really read many reviews, negative or good, so yeah I’d be interested in reading it myself and seeing what I think of it!

Reading through all these beautiful books (covers AND concepts) felt like browsing through a literary wonderland. 15 Lives has been NEXT on my TBR forever, but other bright, shiny books keep getting in the way. I must get to it soon!

Hahaha that’s how I feel with every TTT post I read! I know right! Publishers really need to have a no-publish-season where bookworms can just catch up on book we need to read!

LOL(!!) at the No-Publish-Catch-Up-on-Books season idea. Kind of like no fishing season so the fish can repopulate.

I loved One Hundred Years of Solitude if you haven’t read that yet. I also love Chocolat and I think Shadow of the Wind fits here too. Great list! 🙂

Yes I heard of One Hundred Years of Solitude and I really want to read it! It sounds so deliciously complex. I haven’t heard of the last two books though. I’ll check them out!
Thank you!

Magical realism is such an intriguing genre! Sometimes it can be a hit or miss for me, but a lot of the times I find it to be so cool, haha. 😀 Oftentimes the writing is also very whimsical and poetic, which is interesting! But anyway, great topic! I’ve been meaning to read Wink Poppy Midnight as well; you’re not alone there! And I’ve been telling myself for SO LONG that I’d pick up The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows, but I never got around to it… Great list! ❤

Great list! Don’t worry that’s also always my go to response when someone doesn’t know what Dystopia is 😂 Most people know The Hunger Games so it’s cool.

I’m SO happy you posted this because Magical Realism is something I have always, always wanted to read more of. I learned about it in college very briefly and was hooked, but I wasn’t sure where to start in terms of modern literature! I’m still a bit confused about what defines magical realism, too. What got you started on this type of reading?

Hahaha yes I saw everyone doing fantasy or history and I was kind of like ‘where’s the magical realism??
Hmm I think what really kicked it off was me reading The Night Circus. It was such a beautiful book I had to read more like it.

OMG! The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August. I’ve been trying to remember the title of this book. When I saw the book cover, it just clicked! Thank you.❤
The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August and Everyday are amazing reads. Unique concepts for each of these books. Intricate is a word I can use to describe The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August. Amazing read.👍
I added some books on my TBR from this post, e.g.: Bone Gap and The Love That Split The World. Great post.😀
